Greyfriars Bobby

Dancing Skeleton Tomb
The churchyard of Greyfriars has been in Edinburgh since 1565 - that is an old cemetery and residence to John Gray and his faithful companion Bobby the little dog who is known all over the world.

Greyfriars Bobby attracts fans from all over the world
As I mentioned, this cemetery is really old, and we had a quick look round it on Sunday as we happened to be around the area where it is situated.  What amazes me about this particular gravestone is that some of the headstones are attached to the buildings on the other side, literally built into the walls.

One of the gravestones which I noticed paid respect to Duncan Macfarlane who died on the 4th of July 1774, 2 years before the battle for independence!

Another one had a message that was now exposed but once was hidden behind a statue which has been broken and removed.  That one said "Death where's thy sting, Grave where's thy victory".

The grave which John Gray is buried in has been given a new gravestone, which actually does not go with the graveyard at all and actually looks really rather out of place because it is the most modern of all of the gravestones.  There is not another one like it in the whole graveyard, all the rest are made of old stone, but this one is made of orange coloured granite.  That said, it is very sweet to see that all these years after his death in his dog has made their immortalised their close bond all over the world and that just reinforces how special a pet is to have in your life.

So here are our two faithful companions - we think they are great.
